HDR | Nakata Planning Group has a proud history. Established in 1979 by Clifford S. Nakata, FAIA as an affiliate of Clifford S. Nakata & Associates, a highly respected Colorado Springs architectural firm. Nakata Planning Group was organized specifically to offer focused capabilities in defense installation master planning and related services.

Between 1979 and 1996, the firm's senior members, Charles J. Doll Jr., AICP, Robert L. Preston, AICP, Larry L. Grow, and Edward C. McConnell, AICP grew the practice to become one of the premier military master planning firms in the world. Ownership passed to these individuals in 1996.

In August, 2006, Nakata Planning Group, LLC was acquired by HDR, Inc. Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, HDR was founded in 1917. The employee-owned company pioneered water and sewer systems for new cities and towns throughout the Midwest, helping them emerge from frontier status.

Today, HDR specializes in guiding complex projects and solving whatever challenges may arise for its clients in the public and private sector.
